The Bangkok slum area

Slumarbetet i Bangkok

In 1989, Eva Olofsson founded BaanChivitMai in the slums of Bangkok. This is where we nowadays run a day centre for youth with different kinds of handicap and social disabilities.

Each day at the centre, artificial flowers are made which are then sold for the benefit of the ministry. There are around ten teenage girls who work daytime doing this and then go to school in the evening. There are also around ten people in their twenties with a light mental handicap who, by making the flowers, are being kept busy for a while and also it lets them earn a few baht.

The centre receives around 25 preschool children every day. A teacher educates them and a group of older women help out. In a world marked by violence and misery, the centre becomes a refuge for the children, filled with love and care.

There is also extensive visiting work being done where families living in the slums are visited by teams and physiotherapists.

Jaisamarn Full Gospel Church on Sukumvitt Rd, soi 6 in Bangkok, has from the very beginning been part of and helped with the ministry. During the years, they have taken on more and more responsibility, and these past few years they have practically run the ministry in the slums on their own. Therefor, in 2009, it was decided that BCM would gradually hand over the responsibility during two years time, so that in 2012, Jaisamarn Church will be able to take over the ministry and its funding entirely.
